The best seeds of bell pepper for central Russia

Sweet pepper is not inferior in popularity to tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants in Russia, but the soil and climatic conditions of our country make certain adjustments to the rules for choosing a variety. Acquired pepper seeds for the middle lane must undergo mandatory pre-planting preparation, which will allow to obtain a high and high-quality crop of this popular vegetable crop.

Varieties for open ground

Usually, amateur growers of Russia prefer early sweet pepper varieties for growing in open ground which are optimally suitable for the middle lane and form the crop as soon as possible.

Early and mid-early varieties are most often grown in seedlings, which is due to a fairly short summer period.

Varieties for indoor use

The best varieties for cultivation in a greenhouse or a greenhouse successfully combine early maturity and high productivity, and they can be planted a couple of weeks earlier than when grown on ridges of open ground. It is recommended to give preference to the new and most promising hybrid forms.

Preplant treatment

Seeds sold are not always processed in the factory, so it is very important to properly preplant them:

  • In order to cull deformed and unnaturally colored seeds, calibration is carried out: the largest and smallest, with uniform staining of the surface should be left for sowing;
  • to remove all non-equilibrium seeds, they should be immersed in a 5% solution of edible salt: substandard seeds will emerge;
  • disinfection of seed material is carried out in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate for 20-30 minutes, after which the seeds are washed in clean water;

  • after disinfection, the seeds of pepper are soaked, which can significantly accelerate the emergence of seedlings after sowing;
  • processing of seed material in special biostimulants or nutrient solutions diluted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions has proven itself very well;
  • it is recommended to harden planting material by placing it in the refrigerator for two days in the vegetable compartment;
  • at the final stage of seed preparation for sowing, a sparging method using an aquarium compressor is used.

There is no need to use all methods in preparation. It is very important to remember that bubbling is carried out before disinfection, and hardening should be preceded by a bubbling procedure. Precision, inlaid and poured seeds must not be pre-planted.

A well-performed pre-sowing seed treatment increases the germination rate, increases the resistance of plants to adverse external factors, and also makes the garden crop less susceptible to damage by common diseases and pests.

When and how to plant

Sweet bell peppers are heat-loving crops, and productivity indicators and crop quality of this vegetable crop will depend on proper observance of planting technology:

  • the area for planting pepper should be represented by fertile and weed-free soil and be protected from gusty winds;
  • the best precursors for peppers are legumes, root crops, and cucumbers;

  • the soil on the ridges should have good drainage, and also have a water-holding ability sufficient for a vegetable crop;
  • Before planting, a deep digging of the soil is carried out with the addition of a glass of wood ash, a tablespoon of superphosphate, a tablespoon of potassium sulfate and a teaspoon of urea per square meter.

In the soil and climatic conditions of the middle zone of our country, the planting of peppers on ridges of open ground should be carried out somewhat earlier than the planting of tomatoes. Sowing seedlings is carried out in the second half of February, which is due to the rather slow development and growth of this vegetable crop. Transplanting seedlings into separate planting tanks should be carried out at the end of April, and in the last decade of May, plants are ready for planting in a permanent place.

How to plant pepper

The standard planting pattern for a vegetable crop is 30 x 30 cm. If there is a risk of return frosts, it is advisable to protect the plantings with a non-woven covering material or garden film. Proper planting and proper care will ensure a large and high-quality crop of pepper.
